The Whole30 changed my life

Some of you may be wondering what The Whole30 is. Its a simple program created by Melissa Hartwig (Melissa Urban) and Dallas Hartwig. It is a 30 day program that focuses on eliminating possible inflammation causing foods and possible “trigger” foods from your diet. The Whole30 changed my life forever.

Whole30 rules

The following are off limits

  • Added sugars of any kind. No natural or artificial sweeteners that includes honey, sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, coconut sugar, agave nectar, stevia, Splenda, xylitol, or any other sweetener.
  • Alcohol. No beer, wine, whiskey or any type of alcohol.
  • Grains. This includes corn, oats, wheat, rice, millet, rye, barley, bulgur, amaranth, sorghum, sprouted grains, buckwheat, quinoa. This also includes additives in food like rice bran and gluten.
  • Legumes, this includes soy, peanuts, all beans.
  • Dairy. No goats milk, cows milk or sheep’s milk or any milk products
  • Carrageenan, MSG, and added sulfites
  • Recreation of any baked goods using compliant ingredients
  • Stepping on the scale or taking measurements. Taking measurements in encouraged however before you start the program

During this 30 days you must eliminate all of the off limits foods, if you slip up it calls for a restart to the program

A little back story about me

Before I found The Whole30 I was sick all the time. When I say sick I mean in the bathroom constantly with very unpleasant digestive issues. I wont go into details and I’m sure you will thank me for that. Bloated, overweight, and very uncomfortable in my own skin it was time for a change.

For years I had been going to different doctors and had even seen a few specialists. None of them were ever able to get to the bottom of my digestive issues. I suffered for years. This issue of mine started years ago when I was in grade school. I was diagnosed with anxiety, PCOS, pre diabetes, and IBS. I was given medication after medication, none of them worked.

After the birth of our first son, I got heavy into health and fitness. I started back on my weight loss journey. I tracked what I ate and cleaned up my diet. To my surprise I was more sick than ever. It never got better. I still was successful and lost all my baby weight despite my struggles.

Fast forward to a year ago. Our second son was born, I was tired of being sick. Something had to change. I started to clean up my diet in hopes of not only feeling better but for weight loss as well. Again I became very sick.  I started doing my own research and came across the Whole30. It sparked my interest.

I did tons of research on Whole30, I looked up recipes, I bought the books and prepared myself. I picked a date and started the program.  After a week I started feeling better, I was still struggling with digestive issues. Why didn’t this clear up? The book states that if you still have issues by the end of the 30 days you should consult with a qualified professional. I didn’t want to get to the end of my 30 days and not have answers.

I started a food journal and kept my diet simple while staying Whole30 compliant. After a few days I noticed that certain compliant foods were making me feel sick. I consulted with google, any health care professional will tell you NOT to do this. I started by reading articles based on my symptoms and the food I was Consuming. It is amazing what you can find online, if you know what to look for. All the articles pointed me towards high histamine foods.

Histamine Intolerance

I never knew there was such a thing. According to Wikipedia, a histamine is defined as an organic nitrogenous compound involved in local immune responses. So basically it is a chemical in your body that is responsible for for functions in the body. It is a chemical that can sends messages to your brain. It can trigger the release of stomach acid. It can also trigger an immune response. What causes this?

A build up of histamine in your body. Levels get high for whatever reason. Maybe your body doesn’t break it down properly. After consuming high histamine foods you may notice the following symptoms if you have a build up of histamine.

Symptoms include

  • Flushed cheeks and face
  • Migraines or headaches
  • Fatigue
  • An irregular menstrual cycle
  • Digestive issues
  • Skin issues
  • Memory issues
  • Anxiety
  • Heart palpitations

There are a few different reasons that you could have this histamine intolerance. For me, I will probably never find out.

If I would have never found Whole30, I may have never discovered this. During my first round of Whole30, I cut out high histamine foods. After doing so, I felt great. All my symptoms that I had, all the conditions that I was diagnosed with. ALL GONE!

High Histamine and Trigger foods

  • Egg whites
  • Avocado
  • Strawberries
  • Pineapple
  • Spinach
  • Eggplant
  • Banana
  • Most citrus
  • Smoked meats
  • Cheese
  • Dairy
  • Fermented foods
  • Alcohol
  • Cashew, peanuts and walnuts
  • Raw tomatoes

I am forever thankful to the Whole30 for helping me change my life. I do plan to write about my experience on the Whole30 itself. This post was mostly how it changed my life.

    Thank you Rose, I’ll be checking this out closer. I too have IBS, I have asthma, fibromyalgia, all of which some say could be triggered by food. That you found relief gives me hope.
